Beginning the New Life
God is holy and just, "For
God shall
bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be
good,
or whether it be evil." (Ecclesiastes 12:14) Mankind
is by nature sinful
and needs
the righteousness of God. We must be separated from sin and set apart
to righteousness. If we are to approach God, we must do so on God's
terms, we must have new lives in which our sins have been forgiven and
obliterated.
It is one thing to be convinced of the need for the new life, but it is
an entirely different thing to acquire the new life. When we are
"saved" we are said to be new creatures (2Cor. 5:17); to have passed
from death to life (John 5:24); to have been transferred from the rule
of darkness to the kingdom of God's Son (Col 1:13); to have been born
again (John 3:3); and to have been adopted by God (Gal 4:4, 5). These
wonderful results of having new life in Christ are offered freely to
all who trust in Christ for salvation.
One of the most thrilling benefits of finding new life in Christ is
"everlasting [eternal] life." We enter a new, personal relationship
with God that gives us a fullness of spiritual vitality, and this new
life is a gift which will never die. God can accomplish a life-changing
transformation for all who truly believe in Christ.
How
to know God
1. Realize that you
are a sinner.
"Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the
transgression of the law." (1 John 3:4) "If we say that we have no sin,
we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us." (1 John 1:8) No
matter how good a life we try to live, we still fall miserably short
of being a good person. That is because we are all
sinners. We all fall short of God's desire for us to be
holy. "For all have sinned, and
fall short of the glory of God" (Rom 3:23).
The Bible says, “No one is
good—not even one” (Romans 3:10). This is because we
can
not become who we are supposed to be without Jesus Christ . "For the wages of sin is death; but the free gift
of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6:23).
2. Recognize that
Jesus
Christ died on
the cross for you.
" But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love
with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive
together with Christ (by grace you have been saved) ,"
(Ephesians 2:4-5) and “God showed His great love for us by
sending Christ to die for us while were still sinners” (Romans
5:8). This is the Good News, that God loves us so much that He
sent
His only Son to die in our place when we
least deserved it. "For God so loved the world that he gave His
only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in Him, should not perish,
but have everlasting life."
(John 3:16)
3. Repent of your sin.
"[God] now commands all men every where to repent: because He has
appointed a day, in which He will judge the world in righteousness."
(Acts 17:30) The Bible tells us to “repent and be
converted” (Acts 3:19). The word repent means to change our
direction in life. Instead of running from God, we can run
toward Him.
4. Receive Jesus Christ into your life.
Becoming a Christian is not merely believing some creed or going
to church on Sunday. It is having Christ Himself take
residence in your life and heart. Jesus said, “Behold,
I stand at the door (of your life) and knock. If anyone
hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in.”
(Revelation 3:20).
"That if thou shalt confess
with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that
God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the
heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession
is made unto salvation." (Romans 10:9-10) If you would like to
have a relationship with Christ, simply pray this prayer and mean it in
your heart.
God, please forgive
me for sinning against You. I understand that, according to Your
Law, I deserve to go to hell. However, You are not willing that I
perish. Thank You that Jesus suffered and died for me and rose again
on
the third day. I now repent and yield myself to
Him to be my Lord and Savior. I will read Your Word daily and obey
what I read. Thank you for saving me. In Jesus' Name
I pray. Amen.
If you just prayed that
prayer and meant it, accept it, and believe it, Jesus Christ has now
taken residence in your heart! Your decision to
follow Christ means
God has forgiven you and that you will spend eternity in
heaven. The Bible tells us, “If we confess our sins, he is
faithful
and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse
us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). God's Word also
says, "Be doers of the
word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves." (James
1:22)
